Bardon Hill Quarry

Peter Marshall Steel Stairs provided and installed steel stairs as part of an extension to the Bardon Hill Quarry.

Bardon Hill Quarry is a four million tonne a year granite quarry located just north of Leicester, near Coalville, in Leicestershire. The quarry has been in existence since the 1800s and with planning permission reserves in the current quarry come to a close, permission was granted for an extension. This lies approximately 2 kilometres east of the existing quarry and would comprise of 128 hectares.

As part of the Bardon Hill Extension Project, there was a requirement for upgrade works to the local infrastructure. This included the A511 highway and an upgrade for the existing Level Crossing.

In order to sustain quarrying activities at this strategically important site, a separate material-handling system is required to extract, process and transport overburden for emplacement within the existing quarry as part of its restoration. A unique solution was created to significantly reduce CO2 emissions and minimise the environmental impact associated with a conventional surface conveyor system.

The quarry extension will involve extensive earthworks of topsoil and subsoil. In addition, there will be the creation of drainage and landscaping at the quarry. This is to assist with the removal of approximately 4.3 million tonnes of rock. There will also be a new crushing plant close to the quarry extension. Dust suppression and management of surface and groundwater will be taken care of by the onsite experts at Walters Plant Hire.

The quarry extension will be operational in the summer 2019. The development will supply over 4 million tonnes of aggregates per year to the UK construction industry. As part of the extension at Bardon Hill, Peter Marshall Steel Stairs provided and installed the steel stairs on this project for the main contractor Dawnus Construction Holdings Ltd.
