Greggs Distribution Centre

Greggs, the UK’s largest bakery, is set to create up to 500 new jobs by opening a new state-of-the-art frozen manufacturing and distribution centre covering 23 acres in Spondon, Derbyshire. Greggs has entered into a lease agreement at SmartParc SEGRO for the new facility, which is currently being built, and it will extend their capacity to service up to 3,500 shops in the UK.

The purpose-built facility will have additional manufacturing capacity for products, as well as logistics for frozen storage and fully automated robotic order picking and distribution. Sustainability is an important feature of the new centre and it has been designed with environmental features, such as onsite shared Energy Centre, with a centralised heating and cooling system that recycles heat from refrigeration plants across the estate, a rainwater harvesting system, solar panels and electric vehicle charging points.

As part of the construction of the new facility, Peter Marshall Steel Stairs will design, detail, manufacture, and deliver a number of different external steel stairs with balustrades, which includes supplying 3 x 11 flight external stairs. The first set comprises of 11 flights, with 10 half landings with the supporting structure, and braced supporting columns fixed to the main frame. There is also an external roof stair structure with balustrade which consists of 6 flights, 5 half landings and the supporting structure. Peter Marshall are also supplying over 551 LM of gantry guardrail for the site, which will be manufactured and delivered to the Spondon site.

The SmartParc site in Derby has become a production and distribution hub that now provides two million square feet of food production and distribution space. The new Greggs facility will enable the company to increase its manufacturing capacity, whilst also supporting the expansion of the Company’s logistics network.

The arrival of Greggs, another national company to SmartParc, is the latest in a long line of positive developments for the site which will bring further good quality, sustainable jobs and increase job opportunities for people in the area.
