We supplied and installed external steel stairs as part of the new Deeside Paper Mill, a significant project in Shotton Mill.
Shotton Mill on Deeside has received a £1bn investment that will help to create the UK’s largest manufacturer of recycled paper. The 85.6 hectare site will be capable of producing 750,000 tonnes of cardboard per annum, made from 100% recycled paper. There will also be a new production line capable of making 67,000 tonnes of tissues paper per year.
Funding for the project has come from a number of sources including Eren Holdings, the Welsh Government, UK Export Finance and the UK government’s export credit agency. It will safeguard 147 jobs and create an additional 220 jobs. This significant investment in recycling will help the UK move towards net zero with the creation of more jobs in green industries that are sustainable.
Another paper mill is already underway on the nearby Northern Gateway site, making Shotton Mill one of the largest exporter of cardboard. The new Deeside facility will significantly reduce the amount of cardboard waste being sent abroad to be recycled.
Construction is already underway on the new paper mill and Peter Marshall Steel Stairs were asked to supply and install external steel stairs. We’re proud to contribute to this significant development and are excited to play our part as the construction of the paper mill continues to take shape.
The nature of the technology at the paper mill means a reduction in carbon emissions that is equivalent to emissions from 190,000 homes a year. A key goal of the paper mill is for it to be energy self-sufficient. It will be using a hydrogen-enabled combined heat and power (CHP) plant that will harness waste heat to generate low-carbon energy. Green electricity will also be provided by a new anaerobic digestion plant treating effluent and waste.
The Deeside Paper Mill world-class facility will make it the most advanced paper manufacturing site in the UK and transform recycling levels in the country, while bringing long-term employment to the area
