University Technical College

PETERBOROUGH

Peter Marshall Steel Stairs have provided an external staircase with a mesh enclosure for a project in Peterborough.

Peterborough’s University Technical College (UTC), opened in September 2016,  provides specialist technical programmes, along with traditional core subjects, for students aged 14-19. Peterborough’s UTC is the only STEM and built environment specialist school for students in the city.

The new technical college is designed to address employment shortfalls in many regional engineering and the renewables sector businesses. The new multi million pound campus is focused on engineering with specialist construction, manufacturing, materials, science and electronics labs, as well as workshops.

Students can gain practical experience and develop the skills that would lead them into work or university. The UTC aims to provide young people who have the skills to progress in the technology and scientific industries. By developing students into enterprising professionals of the future, the hope is that, in the long term, the UTC will benefit businesses in the region.

The UTC is also maintaining close links with industry with the goal of arranging job interviews through the employee sponsors. These include Anglian Water and the Larkfleet Group, to give 14-16 year old students the best opportunities for their future.

UTCs across the country are working closely with over 400 companies and universities, with a strong focus on technical subjects. In addition, the local business community is involved and one or more universities is involved in the development of the curriculum. UTCs are designed to bridge the gap between education and the world of work.

As part of the construction project, Peter Marshall provided an external staircase for the main building of Peterborough’s UTC. The external staircase has been designed to connect to the new structure which negates the need for additional bracings to be incorporated, giving the stair and enclosure a visually pleasing appeal.
