Nine Elms

LONDON

Vauxhall and Nine Elms offers mixed-use urban development on an unprecedented scale in Central London. As part of this project Peter Marshall Steel Stairs provided external access steel stairs and balustrades.

The new development will open up new public space and create diverse opportunities for local people. Stretching across the London borough of Lambeth and Wandsworth, the project is set to create 20,000 new homes and it is expected to create 25,000 new jobs. The goal is to transform the district into a dynamic area, to help it grow.

The project will create over 6.5 million square feet of commercial space, providing space for businesses in the heart of London’s Central Activities Centre.

There is also an investment in transport facilities in the area, to make it more accessible for the workforce. This includes new Tube stations, riverboat piers on the Thames and improvements to the road network. In addition, the goal is to create a more pedestrian friendly environment. New public squats, parks and footpaths are being created to make Nine Elms a green and walkable district.
A new section of Thames River Path will open up new opportunities to walk along the riverfront with riverside shops, cafes, restaurants, art spaces, parks and public squares.

As well as new and affordable homes being built in the Nine Elms area, they will be supported by community, health and education facilities. This will enable the construction of a new two-form entry primary school and nursery facility, commercial spaces, new public realm, accessible car parking spaces and cycle parking facilities.

The practical needs of people living in the area have been taken into consideration. The goal is to create a sustainable community that has facilities in place for future growth.

Key project challenges included the demolition of existing buildings and the construction of the first section of the new school. Residential structures whilst the existing school remained in occupation; and the logistical challenges of working adjacent to a live railway and the busy Battersea Park Road.

As part of the construction, Peter Marshall Steel Stairs provided external access steel stairs, 2 temporary stairs and 4 external steel stairs, all complete with vertical infill balustrade.
